Belajar tentang Idiom - Be fighting for your life


Pada aritikel ini akan membahas idiom. Idiom dapat dikatakan juga sebagai ungkapan yang mana maknanya bukanlah terbentuk dari kata kata pembentuknya melainkan setelah kata kata tersebut digabungkan. Dalam bahasa Indonesia juga terdapat idiom.
Contoh idiom dalam Bahasa Indonesia adalah “membanting tulang” yang mana memiliki arti “bekerja keras”.



Sama seperti bahasa Indonesia, bahasa Inggris-pun punya idiom. Berikut merupakan contoh dari penggunaan idiom.
Health, Illness and Death
  1. At death’s door = sekarat
If someone is at death’s door they are seriously ill and likely to die.
  • Jane was so ill that she was at death’s door for three days.
Jane sakit parah yang mana dia sekarat selama tiga hari

  1. Drop like flies = sejumlah orang yang sekarat atau jatuh sakit
If people are dropping like flies, they are dying or falling down in large numbers:
  • The heat was overwhelming and people were dropping like flies.
Panasnya sangat luar biasa dan menyebabkan banyak orang jatuh sakit

  1. Kick the bucket = meninggal
If someone kicks the bucket they die
  • Our neighbor is about to kick the bucket – he has some sort of kidney infection.

  1. Be fighting for your life = berjuang untuk hidup
If someone is fighting for their life they are seriously ill or injured and are in danger of dying.
  • Chris is fighting for his life after that accident. The doctors aren't sure that he'll survive the night.

  1. A shadow of your former self = menjadi kurus dibandingkan dengan sebelumnya
If someone is a shadow of their former self they are very much thinner than they used to be.
  • I couldn’t believe how much weight she’d lost – she’s a shadow of her former self.

  1. Skin and bone or skin and bones = sangat kurus
to be extremely thin
  • By the end of her life she was nothing but skin and bones.

  1. Under the weather = sakit
If you are under the weather you are feeling ill.
  • I’d been feeling a bit under the weather for a couple of weeks.

  1. The worse for wear = perasaan lelah setelah melakukan banyak pekerjaan
Tired or in poor condition because of a lot of work or use
  • After a month of journeying over rough roads, the drivers and their trucks were looking the worse for wear.
